The Day Before by Deanna Benjamin

[57 words]

the sky rains dusky
sonic booms three
electric flickers

there is no gas rationing
yet
no disco-ball dancing

we still walk ourselves to school
hold secrets of self-preservation
bruised hearts and all

glints of mirrored squares
twirling with smoke and ash
and foamy gin & tonics

sirens sag in the distance
the streets are wet
with red umbrellas
