“Barbed Wires” by Ria Banerjee

Did you, my beloved, notice the barbed wires
that run along the length of the city,
to separate you from me?
Such walls of divisiveness are man-made:
penetrating your blue arteries, they weave
narratives of difference
to divide us-
to partition our hearts and mind,
to partition our spirit and soul.
The yellow regret of my past
blends with the scarlet passion
of my desire
in the no-man’s land
where you and I
clash and coalesce.

Ria Banerjee is an upcoming poet from India. She holds a Master’s degree in English Literature from Calcutta University and is currently working as a guest faculty in English at South Calcutta Girls’ College and Prafulla Chandra College (South City, Evening).
