“A Passage” by Irsa Ruçi

This one’s a very special post. We’re presenting to you the work of the highly accomplished Albanian Poet Irsa Ruçi, both translated, and in its original language.

A Passage
by Irsa Ruçi
translated by Silva Daci

Solomon woke early
Waiting the sun to come up
Knitting his prayers.
For the souls of his grandparents
The same words were murmured in a dream that night…

Memory brought to me the little eyes of Solomon
That sought for his silver lining
I was reminded of his smile unchanged from time’s ravages,
When we played till late around the fire that Gabriel set
To gather us in that cornfield
Where a cypress is growing today.

Then, we’re running hungry in the lost streets of Tirana
Racing who would reach first Granny Tamara’s home
We would sneak in, eating the berries from a basket that was never emptied…

Solomon woke up early that morning
To get away
Left me with the sweet memories of that sunny childhood
Granny Tamara’s cooking and the tales she told in her tongue
The heartiness
Which permeated her happiness
And the candy stars that she gave me
On behalf of our friendship…

Rrugëtim
by Irsa Ruçi

në garën kush shkonte i pari tek shtëpiza e nënë Tamarës;
hynim brenda, dhe fshehtas hanim manat
nga shporta që gjithnjë rrinte përplot
mbi tavolinë…

Solomon u zgjua herët atë mëngjes
për të ikur larg;
