Let Us Pretend by Ken A. Cathers

[119 words]

this is our last chance
for escape

I will pull back
the blankets

it is warm inside
smells of sleep.

lie beside me again
imagine us adrift
on an island
small as a raft

let us pretend
that our breath keeps time
with the night

that the cold
is not closing in

the magic  not
breaking apart.

come. let us curl up
under the covers

dream there is
an ocean at the window

wrap the linen moonlight
tighter

nudge the  cat
that sleeps beside us
on the bed

let the world disappear
become a shadow
against an empty sky
	        behind us

let me hold you
close forever

and pretend we are safe here
floating through silence
                in the dark
