First Date, Blank Zoo

I wonder if the turtles study us from their cage,
if they clock my desire, nervous and raw,
etched into every smile you coax from me.

Last Year

I ate so clean I hardly ate at all, whittled
to brittle hipbones and xylophone ribs playing arrhythmia
in my empty chest, gladdening my ravenous heart.

Erin Matheson Ritchie lives in California with her spouse and pet rabbit. She earned her master’s degree in education at Stanford University and taught secondary English for seven years. Her poems appear in New Feathers Anthology, Cosmic Daffodil, and Wishbone Words.
