Light the Fire by LeAnna McEuen

[242 words]

Light the fire my old Druid son
Flick the match as an ode
Watch embers float into the night
Memories disappearing from my mind

Tonight we burn away the stain
We bid farewell to the profane
The protagonist, the catalyst
The liars and insane

It burns as I am cleansed
From their sickness and their names
There is mystery in antiquity
Familiarity in my ancestry

Power in the nature of things—
Their energy
The atom is living
Building block of life
Core of all creation
Invisible is it not?
Frequencies emit
Around every living thing
Plant, river, human, spirit
Pure, life-giver, wicked, innocent

I love the light
of the stars
I love the light
of a brave heart
I love the light
of fire’s spark
I live in light
though grow in dark

As seed that is planted
Whether intention or disarray—
They knew something I did not
My soul returns to nature
My soul finds my creator
In his creation—
Flames on the hill
Revelation before the kill
In nature God has always been
Reflection of the infinite

A malleable force to burn and cleanse
Was understood of my prior kin
I resonate with practices past
Mikvahs, blessings, the fast

I understand we are like grass
Here today, tomorrow— gasp!
Gather the toxins, the journals and lies, The words and misfortunes of my former life—

Burn them high so the owls can see!
Smoke— the vapor from my healing
