Morning by Anthony ILacqua

[117 words]

“I like morning,” he said. We milled around with the deboarding passengers.
“You do?” I asked,
“Don’t you?” Stephen asked.
“I work nights,” I said.
“You’re on vacation now,” he said.
“What?”
“Well,” he said, “We’re strangers here and when you’re up this early you see how a town
works.”
I heard roars of taxis and delivery trucks. I saw the sun lighting the buildings of the Venetian
Quarter of Chania. The memory of my last miserable job became two dimensional. The memories that
followed: my ex-wife, my auto accident, my days in court. I looked to Stephen and asked: “Is every
morning like this?”
He said, “every one. I love it.”
“I can’t see how.”

After leaving his job at the sweatshop manufacturing decorative pillows, Anthony ILacqua became an out of print author of two books you’ve probably never read. He co-founded Umbrella Factory Magazine in 2009 and has remained the editor in chief since. His short fiction has most recently appeared in Short Beasts, Stimulus Respond and Unlikely Stories.
